Overview

Albert Marius Hippolyte Decaris, born May 6, 1901 in Sotteville-lès-Rouen (Seine-Inférieure) and died January 1, 1988 in Paris, is a French painter, decorator and engraver. Burinist known for his virtuosity, he also worked in watercolor and ink, often to prepare his engravings, and engraved many postage stamps. He is the maker of more than 600 large engravings on various subjects (mythology, views on Rome, Italy, Greece, Spain and France, allegories, portraits of contemporaries or historical figures) and many watercolors and ink washes. 1943: Elected to the Academy of Fine Arts; he became president in 1960. 1948: Gold medal in engraving at the 1948 Olympics. 1953: Appointed a Knight of the Order of Merit post by order of January 15, 1954. 1962: appointed official painter of the Navy. 1969: Gold Medal and Medal of Honor from the Society of French Artists for a burin engraving. Officer of the Legion of Honor. June 1981: exhibition of his very large works in the Musée de la Poste. 2001: Issue of a stamp in his honor, drawn and engraved by Claude Jumelet.
