Self-taught Technique: Silkscreen, Collage and Gouache. Sam Middleton is a painter, watercolorist and lithographer who specializes in collages. After growing up in Harlem and having lived in many countries (Mexico, Japan, Spain and Sweden, the 'Master of Collage' established himself in the Netherlands in 1961. After living in Amsterdam for years, he became fascinated by the landscape. located in Schagen in the head of North Holland. Music (classical as well as jazz and pop) and the Dutch landscape form the climate in which his work - abstract expressionism - arises. Middleton has taught at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem and at the Royal Academy in Den Bosch. Sam Middleton can be called the first modern African American artist in the Low Countries. According to coastal critic Frans Duister, who describes his work as 'Music for the eyes'. Because the echo of great jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other celebrities from his youth plays through his work in an inimitable way, like a broad undercurrent that determines the 'sound' of his oeuvre and fertilizes the textures and rhythm of his work. . Middleton has achieved national and international fame with his collages. His work has been exhibited many times in renowned Dutch and foreign art museums.
