Willem Hussem (Rotterdam 1900 - The Hague 1974) Painter, sculptor and poet. Education: In 1917 Hussem goes to the art academy in Rotterdam, he does not like it here and after a year leaves the academy to take lessons with painter and graphic artist Dirk Nijland. Willem Hussem has lived and worked in the South of France, Paris and The Hague. In 1919 he left for the South of France to develop further. He lived in Paris for a few years and met greats such as Picasso and Mondrian. After 18 years in France, Willem Hussem returned to the Netherlands in 1936 and settled in The Hague. Here he developed into the painter of abstract works with geometric shapes, which is now his most famous work. Willem Hussem also made a number of murals, sculptures and plastics. In 1956 he became a member of the Posthoorngroep and in 1960 his work was shown at the Venice Biennale. Exhibitions and prices: His work is in the possession of, among others, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Dordrechts museum.
